Backcountry Roads: North San Diego County
Distance: 53 miles one way

Experience diverse San Diego scenery along Highway 76 as you make your way inland from the ocean, passing through scenic rural communities, a national forest, and a Native American reservation along the way before ending at a shimmering lake.

 

The Route:

Hop on the 76 in Oceanside and follow east for as long as you like!

Nessy Burgers: A hidden gem that’s easy to miss, swing by this unassuming roadside burger stand that’s a favorite among locals for a reason! You can thank us later.

Mission San Antonio de Pala: This beautiful historic mission is the only California mission that still actively serves a community and also boasts a free-standing bell tower.

Gems of Pala: Step back in time and play miner for a bit by hunting for precious stones at this locally-owned and operated tourmaline mine.

La Jolla Indian Reservation: Grab an innertube and float down the San Luis Rey River, which flows through the middle of the campground onsite and is open for day use.

Lake Henshaw: Resting at the base of the Palomar Mountains is Lake Henshaw, a reservoir ideal for year-round boating, fishing, bird watching, or just cooling off!

Cleveland National Forest: Pull off at this intersection for a picnic among the trees and feel like you’re miles away from it all!
